Social media is everywhere and for most teens, especially girls, it has become the backdrop of their entire adolescence. We often hear about the dangers of screen time or cyberbullying, but something deeper and more pervasive is happening.
We need to ask: What is social media really doing to our daughters?

The Hidden Toll of Social Media on Teens
Teen mental health is in crisis. And while social media isn’t the only factor, it’s one we can’t ignore. Research continues to show clear links between social media and mental health outcomes in adolescents. But here’s what’s often missed: Girls are affected more often, and more deeply, than boys.
They’re spending more time on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and what they’re exposed to aren’t just filtered photos — it’s a daily onslaught of “upward comparison,” performance pressure, and harmful beauty ideals.
Why Does Social Media Affect Girls More Than Boys?
Girls today report higher levels of anxiety, depression, body dissatisfaction, and feelings of worthlessness — all of which correlate strongly with social media use. The platforms they use most are highly visual, algorithm-driven, and designed to keep them scrolling through content that often reinforces unrealistic expectations.
Meanwhile, boys tend to use social media differently and report fewer emotional consequences. This gender gap matters, and yet too few people are talking about it.
Social Media Effects on Mental Health: Performance Fatigue, Body Shame, and Burnout
From the thousands of girls I’ve spoken with in my workshops and research, one thing is clear: many are exhausted. Exhausted from curating their lives. Exhausted from judgment. Exhausted from trying to measure up.
They describe life online as a “performance” and admit that it’s nearly impossible not to compare themselves to what they see on their feeds. The result? Declining self-esteem, increasing disconnection from their own bodies, and a feeling that they’re never quite “enough.”
